Principal's Letter

Dear Terrace Park Families,

Greetings! I hope that you have enjoyed your summer and you’re ready for the 2018 – 2019 school year. I want to extend a special welcome to new families as they join the Terrace Park community! 

Our teachers and staff are working hard to get ready and their excitement is building as we approach September. I want to remind you of the following: 

  • Wednesday, September 5th is our first day of school for students in 1st through 6th grade.
  • Monday, September 10th is the first full day of school for Kindergarten students. Kindergarten students and their families will meet for 30 minutes with their teacher on either September 5th , 6th, or 7th .
  • Breakfast is served beginning at 8:30 A.M. Only students eating breakfast should arrive before 8:50 A.M
  • On the first day of school, students arrive at school and go into classrooms at 8:50 A.M. We have two bells. The first bell rings at 8:50 a.m. when the classroom doors open. The second bell is to start school and it rings at 9:00 a.m. Students arriving between 8:40 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. will line up either in the Gym (K-3rd grade) or Commons/ Lunchroom (4th – 6th grade). Students arriving between 8:50 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. should go straight to their classroom. After 9:10 a.m., students should check in at the office.
  • Dismissal is at 3:30 p.m.
  • Safety is important at Terrace Park. Please cross streets at designated cross walks. Adult crossing guards and student patrols will be at designated locations. Please be sure to wear a helmet if riding a bike. Walk your bike when on school grounds.
  • Student drop-off is located in the parking lot beside the school. Please pull forward as far as possible. Vehicles travel in a one-way traffic pattern in the parking lot. Please drive carefully on school property and refrain from using your cell phone.
  • It takes several days for a regular traffic flow to develop in and around the parking lot. Please be patient, stay in the line of cars and drive extra slowly. Thank you!

You and your student(s) are invited to a Back to School Open House on Tuesday, September 4th at 3:00 p.m. The purpose of the open house is to meet the teacher and see friends. Parents and students can meet teachers in their classroom 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. If you need to conference with your child’s teacher, please set up an appointment at another time. You may bring school supplies, immunization records, and any medications to the office. Please deposit your child’s school supplies in the classroom; be sure your child’s supplies are labeled with their first and last name. Terrace Park PTA will provide popsicles after the Open House. 

The Terrace Park staff takes the placement of children into their classrooms very seriously. We invite parent input each spring. The placement of each and every Terrace Park student is a team process; however, all classroom assignments are tentative until after the first week of school. We take many factors into consideration: academic skills, needs, learning styles, social-emotional needs, gender balance, leadership abilities, special education needs, classroom enrollment numbers, and parent input. We strive to create balanced classrooms. After consideration by the Terrace Park staff and with parent input, your child’s tentative classroom assignment will be available on Skyward Family Access on Friday, August 31st and emailed in a welcome letter from your student’s new teacher.

I am confident that this placement will help your child grow and learn. It is important that our students come to believe that they can learn with any teacher and in any classroom. Occasionally, a placement seems like it may not be a good fit. We have a process for reviewing legitimate classroom placement issues. Parents may pick up the form for reviewing a classroom placement from the Terrace Park office. Any changes in the placement of a student, if granted through this review process, will not take place until after the enrollment count during the first few weeks of school. 

Applications for free and reduced lunch are available online and also in the Terrace Park Office. New applications must be filled out and submitted every year. Be sure to complete the form and return it to the school office as soon as possible. There are no IOU’s, so please pack a lunch for your child until you get confirmation from Food Service whether or not your family is eligible for free or reduced lunch fees. Students that received free or reduced lunch last school year are still eligible through September based on last year’s application. 
School supply lists are available online and in the school office and we have school supplies available for students needing assistance. 

Please sign up for Terrace Park’s Parent Email List if you have not been receiving emails from us!Just contact our office so that we can put your email into Messenger. You will receive weekly updates with all the news, activities, and calendar information you need.

On the first day of school, please have your 1st – 3rd grade child report to the gym and your 4th –6th grade student report to the Commons on Wednesday, September 5th.

This letter is intended to answer some of your questions about the first few days of school. You will receive much more detailed information in the Wednesday packet that will come home with your child once school begins.
